Buju, born Mark Myrie, was arrested in December 2009 after he was met by a convicted drug trafficker on a flight from Spain who planned to set up a cocaine deal for him. After his conviction of drug trafficking in February 2011, the reggae icon was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

His initial release date was February 2019, but was later revised to December 8, 2018.

Buju Banton recently released a statement making it very clear that his main focus upon his release is his music.

“Having survived, I want to share the good news and strength of my music. I just want to continue making music, which I’ve devoted my life to. I look forward to the opportunity to say a personal thanks to my fans and everyone who supported me,” Buju said.

Welcome Back: Reggae Artist Buju Banton is Free from Prison!

Family, friends and fans of Buju Banton are ecstatic now that the reggae artist is out of prison in the U.S and back home where he belongs.

Born, Mark Myrie, Buju was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of intent to distribute more than 5KG of Cocaine.

The Grammy award winning artist was convicted back in February of 2011, nonetheless he has been released and will reportedly be on a flight back to Kingston tomorrow!

Even though the Jamaican Government has nothing planned Buju banton will still be going home to a hero’s welcome, the most eagerly awaited arrival in Jamaica since Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie touched down in April 1966.
Jamaica’s culture minister, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, reports that Banton “is now really about, from what we understand, employment of young people. If he can help shape and resocialise young people, that is something we should embrace.”

That said, the government isn’t pulling out any stops. “We can’t give him a hero’s welcome,” says minister of national security, Horace Chang. “He committed a crime.” And yes, Grange agrees, “There’s no getting over the fact that he was convicted, but Buju was loved long before he was convicted and he will be loved just the same, even if he comes home in handcuffs.”

The event, which is making the promo rounds across the urban dial and online, is expected to begin at 12 noon at the top of Frederick Street in Port-of-Spain, traveling downtown and onward to Ariapita Avenue, with entertainment by Isasha and a number of other amazingly talented artistes, some of whom are being flown in for the event. “It’s truly an honor to be considered for this cast. It’s also going to be an honor to get the opportunity to share the stage with Buju when he’s released,” said the singer.

Isasha recently released a song called, “We Got Love”- a track dedicated to victims of recent flooding on the island. Commenting on his anticipation for Buju’s imminent return to the stage, Isasha said he, like many other artistes, grew up listening to Buju’s music, explaining that the Til Shiloh album is irreplaceable to him. “His career is going to be boosted- we are sure about that,” he highlighted, adding that despite what the artiste would have endured while incarcerated, he certainly would have gotten the time needed to reflect on his life, and spend time with God.

The Reunification Road ShowThe Reunification Roadshow will be a true celebration of Buju Banton’s body of work, with true fans being given the opportunity to come out and show their support for the reggae icon. “We felt the need to do this for the people. Many of Buju’s fans have stood patiently, waiting for this day. We could never let it just pass by,” said the event organizer. Isasha meanwhile, told EBUZZTT that he knows the people are going to be very hungry to see the ‘Hills and Valleys’ singer. “Out of something bad, comes something good. Buju will be in high demand,” he said.

Already planning to deliver a powerful performance at the Reunification Roadshow on December 8th, the T&T artist said he plans on performing with a live band. “This will be a proper show,” he assured. Beyond the Reunification, Isasha told us he continues to work on delivering music videos for new songs and also has another tribute in the pipeline for his brother, Million Voice who passed away in August.
